Knitting Swatches
Will substituting bamboo for cotton change the gauge?

I am knitting two Mother of the Bride handkerchiefs and fell in love with a bamboo yarn, opting for that instead of the 100% cotton that the directions suggest. I knit up a gauge swatch because I normally never do and these projects are for my Hope Chest and my wedding party scrap book, and I think I found an issue with my lovely yarn. The gauge for the project is 32 stitches and 36 rows = 4" for size 3 needles in Stockinette stitch. My swatch is more like 32 stitches = 5 1/2 inches across. I did only do 16 rows because the swatch is about the size of the finished project! I reduced to size 2 and then size 1 needles, achieving a gauge of 32 stitches = 4 15/16". I'm thinking of reducing my stitches until I make a swatch with the size 3 needles that is only 4" wide. Any advice, and any helpful websites would be very appreciated! Thank you in advance.

It looks like both yarns are of different weight.

If I were you, I'd go for the 16 rows to get the right size. Either that, or go for size 0 (which is less fun usually). The more important part is the crochet edging.

Knit Dress - Learning Stages

Knitting can be fun and rewarding once you learn how to do it. Beginners and advanced knitters can create some of the most beautiful pieces of clothing. It is fairly simple to learn how to knit a dress even for beginners; with the right materials it can be done.

How to Learn to Knit

There are several ways to learn how to knit. There are knitting kits, how to videos, classes etc. Basically practice makes perfect, you can start small with a dolls outfit and work your way up to an adult version. The first step to knitting a dress would be to research a little online, watch several videos and get the materials needed, yarn, needles, pattern kit etc. Follow the pattern for beginners to the letter and read the label on the yarn and go slowly at first. The first step will be to make a 4"x4" gauge swatch and use that to monitor how you will make the whole dress.

Experiment with needles and yarn in order to get a feel for knitting and what the stitches will look like. When making a dress it is best to use what is called a lifeline which is contrasted colors of yarn that is stitched through every few rows of the original outfit, this way if you need to unravel a portion of the outfit you won't have to accidentally unravel more than needed. When searching for yarn look decide before hand whether you want a classy, dressy or casual look.

Types of dresses

Right now spring is upon us and a nice spring/summer dress would be appropriate, with this type of dress a circular needle or a straight crochet hook may be used. The material used could be sport weight cotton, soy silk, Ingle or Tencel. The pattern kit will give you all of the information you need, for beginners it is best to follow the patter exactly, for advanced knitters you can change it up a bit.

Conclusion

When making a knit dress it is wise to make sections of it and knit them together. Make small sections in rows or squares depending on your style and then sew or knit them together. There are so many different types of free patterns online or you can purchase a specific pattern from a yarn or craft store and play around with it and have fun, it doesn't have to be perfect and always ask for help.
